Pizza on a Baking Steel

In the original review of baking stones, steel stones weren’t covered because they weren’t yet available. So here’s a test run of the Baking Steel. Just like cast iron, the Baking Steel is virtually indestructible, heats up a bit quicker and conducts heat really well. It’s larger (14×16 inches), and rectangularly shaped, while the cast-iron Lodge product is round, and smaller, with more chance for stray ingredients to go overboard. That’s in favor of this alternative metal product.

This one’s a little thicker so that the crust would be nice and puffy.

  1. No red sauce, just brushed with garlic-and-herb infused olive oil and topped with mushrooms, spinach, artichokes, kalamata olives. roasted red peppers, freshly-grated Parmesan and either some shredded provolone or baby mozzarella.

  2. Any pizza – except if it has mushrooms is wonderful! Mushroom allergy so they can’t be included, and I prefer thin crust.

  3. My favorite pizza has salty kalamata olives, spicy pepperoni, and an ungodly amount of gooey mozzarella cheese!

  4. White Pizza. garlic butter base, mozz and provolone cheese , tomatoes , black olives… with a side of blue cheese!

  5. Last year we finished building our own backyard wood fired pizza oven. Best pizza we ever made was a margurite with fresh basil tossed on top. Done in 90 sec!!!

  6. I’m a pizza addict!…make it from scratch and eat it 3+ times/wk. I followed your book and keep dough ready in the fridge when pizza is the only thing that sounds appetizing…which is often.

  7. I NEED to try that breakfast pizza! My favorite pizza to date is from a place called Bir & Fud in Rome– buffalo mozzarella is HEAVEN!

  8. My favorite is a chicken cordon bleu pizza which I make with a jarred Alfredo sauce, diced chicken, ham and Swiss cheese. So good!

  9. My favorite is Italian sausage, mushroom, onion and red peppers. This steel looks amazing. Thanks.

  10. Ummm, a medium thin crust, thin enough to get crisp on the bottom but still have a little chewiness, topped sparingly with tomato sauce, liberal amounts of mozzarella, gruyere, and sharp cheddar cheeses, and finished with caramelized onions!!! Ooooo think I’ll make one now. Yumm.

  11. Favourite? NYC pizza! Motorino’s brussel sprout pizza, or perhaps Jim Lahey’s Co. onion pizza (on a good day!)!

  12. Decisions, decisions…..O.K. a thick and chewy crust, baked until the bottom is crisp and the cheese oowey gooey. Toppings are thinly sliced steak, onions, green peppers, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese and blue cheese. Sometimes I use a traditional red sauce and othertimes I substitute steak sauce. My wife likes to add dried cherries to her half. Yeah…this is definitely my favorite.

  13. My favorite pizza is from my hometown & is very specific to that area. It’s baked in a sheet pan, nice & crispy on the bottom but soft & doughy on top. Lightly sauced – and the thing that really sets it apart is that the toppings are put on after it comes out of the oven. My mouth is watering!

  14. I love it when my whole family makes homemade pizza together. My mom and I, our favorite is, sliced home grown tomatoes, artichokes, bacon, onions, mozzarella and garlic sauce. My dad’s fav is all cheese mozzarella, cheddar, romano and parmesan. My little brother likes anything so long as its on a pizza. All the pizzas are especially good because they are fresh homemade and we have the fun of making them together. Mom always saves out some “extra” dough which we bake with butter, cinnamon and brown sugar. Yum maybe THATS my favorite pizza 🙂

  15. I love pizza, anywhere from thin crust to thick crust, all veggie to everything but the kitchen sink….my office is right next store to our local pizza parlor…leaving work on a Friday night is like heaven!!! I like a BBQ chicken pizza with BBQ sauce as the sauce. Yummm!!!!

  16. My favorite pizza is a simple, thin crust pizza with pesto or a tomato based sauce (or a combination of both), onions, bell pepper, and cheese. Too much topping makes it harder to get the crust to be crisp. Bake in as hot an oven as you can get.

  17. I am so inspired by this article I will have to try making bread in 5!! I truly don’t have a favorite recipe for pizza; I am challenged to try creating a breakfast pizza too! I never thought to have pizza as homemade bread- love the recipe and photo provided! 🙂

  18. Start with Artisan Bread in 5 pizza dough, of course! Top with sauce prepared with San Marzano tomatoes, garlic and a splash of balsamic vinegar. Add spicy Sicilian sausage and fresh mozzarella. So wonderful!

  19. My favorite pizza is from Italy. It was on a fresh baked crust out of a pizza oven. They used olive oil, no red sauce, cheese, onions and olives. YUM!!

  20. My favorite pizza is any that I make with my kids! Crust and toppings don’t matter, we’ve tried it all. They love making pizza as a family! Every Easter we make an egg shaped fruit pizza with “fancy,” fruity designs. My son wanted pizza for his 7th birthday, so we made individual breakfast pizzas and mini-fruit pizzas for a birthday brunch.

My friends tell me that their children are adults and still enjoy making pizza when the family gets together!

Maybe happy memory pizza is my favorite!

  21. I once had the most fabulous breakfast pizza from the most unusual place: a gas station convenience store! My niece bought a piece and was raving about it so much that I had to try a bite. It was scrumptious! I haven’t tried making it yet, but might soon…

  22. Flatbread..my favorite tomato sauce.. fresh spinach, sliced tomato, feta cheese, mozzarella. A nice glass of wine for the very long wait until the masterpiece cooks to perfection. Aaaahhhhh. Does it get any better than that? Seriously 🙂

  23. My favorite pizza comes from a pizza parlor and involves bacon and onions …but I’d like to make my own pizza!
