Pizza on a Baking Steel
In the original review of baking stones, steel stones weren’t covered because they weren’t yet available. So here’s a test run of the Baking Steel. Just like cast iron, the Baking Steel is virtually indestructible, heats up a bit quicker and conducts heat really well. It’s larger (14×16 inches), and rectangularly shaped, while the cast-iron Lodge product is round, and smaller, with more chance for stray ingredients to go overboard. That’s in favor of this alternative metal product.
Here’s a breakfast pizza with prosciutto, cherry tomatoes, sautéed kale, soft goat cheese and fresh thyme, baked on our olive oil dough with an egg cracked on top.
This one’s a little thicker so that the crust would be nice and puffy.
This is a traditional Margherita pizza with homemade tomato sauce, mozzarella and fresh basil.
Happy baking!

I am partial to cheese and mushrooms
I love to make homemade dough and top it with: In this order: butter, olive oil, garlic powder (powder seems to be stronger than the fresh garlic)shredded mozzerella and finally sprinkle with your choice of romano or parmesan!! GARLIC PIZZA!!
I’m a sucker for a kale and onion pizza. I love how the kale gets crunchy on top of the pizza.
I love all pizza, but my current favorite has figs, feta, sage, and bacon, with olive oil crust, inspired by Pizza My Heart’s Figgy Piggy.
I love to make pizza with jerk chicken, sliced Roma tomatoes, Granny Smith apples, cream cheese, fresh mozzarella, and a few jalapeños. The sweet and spicy together is a must try.
My current favorite pizza is made with your Soft Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread recipe (easier on the braces) For sauce I blend a tomato with my immersion blender. Then it is a free for all with thinly sliced zucchini, artichoke hearts, sweet peppers, black or green olives, fresh basil and lots of freshly grated parmesan.
I love any kind of pizza, my favorite is probably Magherita!
sourdough with fresh basil, caramelized onion, mozzarella, and blue cheese.
homemade dough, peanut butter, pepperoni, jalapeno, canadian bacon, pineapple, cheese
I love experimenting with pizza! I think my favorite topping is ricotta and other soft cheeses. Yum!
I’d love to try a baking steel! I make so much bread and pizza that I’ve cracked several “lifetime guarantee” stones (which, I found out are only guaranteed…until you break your next one.) Right now I bake on a few stones that I fit together to make a large one. Save me from such a fate! 🙂
My favorite pizza is the margherita pizza. Nothing tastes quite like fresh basil, fresh tomato sauce and buffalo mozzarella together.
Focaccia-like homemade crust, garden herbs, homemade marinara variant, eggplant, and parm & mozz cheeses. Beer or red wine or your choice.
I’m perfectly happy with a Margherita. Good crust and good cheese are the keys.
My favorite pizza? Toss-up between a chorizo and fried egg breakfast pizza I grilled one morning, and the Buffalo chicken pizza I invented one day that I keep going back to.
KISS: Margherita all the way 🙂
Pepperoni and Jalapeno. Still the best around…
I surprised myself last summer by making the best pizza I’ve ever tasted. I used the olive oil dough recipe from Artisan Bread in 5, a variety of fresh tomatoes and herbs from my and my neighbors garden to make the sauce, with some smoked moz and nice pepperoni and fresh basil to top it off. I’ve not been able to produce one quite as nice since, but that doesn’t keep me from trying!
I love my pizza with dabs of ricotta on it and olive oil carmelized onion tomato and parm cheese
I love your website and approach to baking — you’ve changed the way I make all dough! My favorite pizza right now is a salami and banana pepper pizza — it has a nice balance of not too spicy and the vinegar punch (the combo was inspired by a Domino’s artisan pizza actually!). Happy baking everyone!
Looooove flatbread pizza with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and arugula on top! Haven’t ever learned to make pizza myself, but I would a love to learn how. Thanks for the chance to win the great book and stone. 🙂
My favorite pizza is a delicious mix of earthy flavors: carmelized onions, sweet Italian sausage, roasted garlic and roasted red peppers. Add fresh basil. No tomato sauce needed. Yum!
I love a thin crust pizza with pepperoni and black olives. Just started making my own.
I love canadian bacon and pineapple on my pizza. The pizza looks so yummy in your photos!
You can’t go wrong with a Margherita.
I am so intrigued by the baking steel! On the off chance I *don’t* win, where can I purchase one? I’ve not yet made pizza on the grill, and this looks like the perfect tool to try! Love your books. Made caramel rolls, babka (I tried that nutella idea you shared in the last week or so), and loaves of bread for Easter Sunday. All were perfectly delicious!
I’m a new fan and follower. And extend friendship and respect to everyone who takes the time and love to make their pizza from scratch.
Pepperoni, pepperoni, pepperoni. Although I also like lots of cheese!
After making dough your way, pizza is kind of like a staple in our house! I love olive oil dough since its so versatile!
My favorite pizza is pesto sauce drizzled on grilled corn, red onions and fresh jalapeno slices (thinly sliced, slightly salted) on a bed of chunky tomato sauce. Yumm!!!
Margherita is definitely my favorite, and of course, thin and crispy crust.
I absolutely love love love spinach and feta pizza. I can never pass it up and crave it on a regular basis!
My favorite pizza is parbaked crust in the oven, then finished on a closed grill on an awesome summer day. At that point, basic tomatoes and hand pulled mozzarella works great, and any other toppings almost always work.
I’ve gone meat and dairy free. And yet, I am still able to make wonderful pizzas. The last one I made that was very good was with roasted garlic spread over the bottom and sliced tomatoes, artichoke hearts, zucchini, mushrooms and spinach with an all over drizzle of cashew cream.
Favorite pizza is a simple red sauce with buffalo mozzarella. Yum.
Ham and olives!
Pizza!!! My favorite is Margherita pizza however my hubby loves any pizza with only meat on it. Lucky me, I get to make two!
I just bought the pizza recipe book and so far have used the master recipe and love it. I have eight children and they love pizza at least once a week. We make individual size and they all put their own toppings.
I love my pizza with thin crust and lots of veggie toppings!
This spring we have enjoyed Friday night pizza with artichokes and roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella. In the summertime we love to use our home made pesto and fresh tomatoes.
My favorite pizza is garlic and bacon…especially using my own home grown garlic….sometimes I add some mushrooms especially in spring and fall when we find some wild ones…..my husband likes any kind of pizza.
We always have a tub of this dough in the frig! We eat pizza at least once per week and I’ve even used the dough for quick breadsticks when we’re having pasta and I don’t have any other bread in the house. My favorite pizza? Smoked turkey and jalapeno! Even better if it’s made on the grill.
I love a white pizza – for some reason I think you really taste all the ingredients and the true flavor of the crust that way!
I would love to try this baking stone. My son and I have enjoyed testing bread and pizza recipes, as well as different baking conditions.
Thanks for your books, recipes, and inspiration!
Quatro staggione!
I love my baking steel. Makes the best pizzas and calzones.
Two variations:
1. Simple Margarita – Sauce, Cheese, basil
2. Pepperoni and Green Olive
I love a thin crust but a chewy, airy edge, not too many toppings and really don’t need the sauce. A good old fashioned margherita but with thinly sliced summer tomatoes is fantastic!!
My current favorite pizza is red sauce, fresh mozzarella, ricotta mixed with a little salt and pepper and some lemon zest, olive tapenade, speck, fresh parm and then topped after baking with arugula, olive oil and a little salt and pepper.
Sausage, carmelized onions, pepperoni, green olives. But – really anthing my wife makes is great 🙂
Mama Lil’s peppers and Italian sausage!
I have so many favorites! Buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto, egg, everything and anything! I would love to be able to experiment more in the kitchen with a baking steel 🙂
